I lived for a brief time in Pinellas County / St. Petersburg Florida where I purchased my first home in 1996. It was a quaint, albeit run down, bungalow in the Gulfport section of the city. In my yard was this... GLORIOUS, huge Orlando Tangelo tree - the Orlando Tangelo being a cross between a tangerine and an orange. For the four years I lived there, starting around Thanksgiving, the fruit would begin to ripen into these marvelously sweet, juicy treats! Since moving up to Rhode Island, about once a year, the markets here in Southern New England will get a shipment in (labeled as "Juicy Crunch Tangerines" because who in the Hell ever heard of a "Tangelo"?). Usually they are in mid/late December, but this morning, behold - Orlando Tangelos!
There is another more familiar variety, the Honeybell, but those tend to be not as juicy or sweet.
Glad to see that the Nobel Citrus company in Winter Haven, FL has working Juicy Crunch Tangerine Orlando Tangelo groves! If you see them in your market, pick up a couple! You won't be disappointed!
