I love this time of year when candidates ring my doorbell asking for my vote. I look them in the eye and ask, "Are you a Democrat or Republican?". The Democrat and Independent always responds proudly what they are, the Republicans usually hmmm and haw about non-partisanship and hand me their nondescript flier.
Our official town ballot has a list of committees and councils listed as "Non-partisan", but I learned many years ago - don't give the fucking GOP any leverage in our local government. Several decades ago, our town approved the building of a casino, the proceeds of which were to help bolster our schools and town infrastructure. A bunch of astro-turf Republicans got voted into our town board and suddenly those monies got diverted to their cronies and special interests. They got voted out in the next election cycle, and we righted the ship.
THAT SAID, I pull the ballot and I look at who is running. I use the site Voter Records to bang their names off known voter rolls. Currently, 17 states provide information there; Rhode Island is one of them. Another thing that helps is to take your ballot and look at who is posting a yard sign in front of the local gun shop. They get crossed off the list.

Not enough people do their proper homework. Of course this year I did no money hands out for anyone...not till the elected officials get things done and PASSED. I'm tired of being blackmailed for my vote on the same topics every election, and then no results. And that was even when we Dems had all three branches of government and still didn't get things passed we should have. Until many get their act together and deliver like Mandami is doing, Ill will keep voting them out, and go after new candidates.
I am also willing to give the progressive candidates a chance. Done with establishment politicians.
