Christmas Eve is upon us. This is my most favorite day... night... of the year. It's after 5PM, all the stores are closed; the presents are all wrapped and under the tree. There is nothing more to do except relax. This world... for a few moments at least... is in peace.
It was Christmas Eve 1983 - my first year living on my own. I had a studio apartment (truly a hole in the wall) on the main drag in Warren, RI. The apartment building was in the middle of a block of five or six churches of most prominent denominations. Around mid-afternoon, snow began to fall, and by sunset, there was a good three inches on the ground. Enough to prevent me from driving to my siblings home in New Bedford for the night. I decided to bundle up and take myself for a walk around town. As I ventured out, the church carillons began chiming Christmas carols; the snow had the effect of muting the ringing; instead of bone-rattling bells sounding off as if at war with one and other, the offering was peaceful. Tranquil. Even, for once, spiritual. I've carried memories of that walk with me ever since.
So to all of you visiting here this evening, to those around the world, may you find a moment of peace. Make a glass of Slivinog and savor the evening.
I hope you have a very Merry Christmas!
I leave you with my FAVORITE Christmas Special.

What a beautiful Christmas Eve memory! Yes, I'm going to have a glass of eggnog this evening too! Maybe even with some rum in it!
I would enjoy a glass of eggnog, but it’s not to be found around here. That walk would stay in my mind forever.
